Why I’m So Pleased not to be in New York Five Lighty Years On

Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans, the late great John Lennon once said. It’s always been one of Mrs Lighty’s favourite sayings (and the fact that I heard it first uttered by the great influencer of our time, Carrie Bradshaw, has nothing to do with it at all!!). It sums up beautifully that even the best laid plans can go awry.

I think it’s safe to say that this has certainly been true of the Lightys, and I can say that with a fair wealth of experience under our belts – or indeed, under our wedding garter – as today is our fifth wedding anniversary!

Looking so happy on our wedding day!

Five whole years of officially being Mrs Lighty! And what a whirlwind they have been, with more ups and downs than a yoyo. At lots of points over the past five years I didn’t think we’d be at the stage we’re at now; sometimes I thought we’d be ‘further forward’ than we are now, and perhaps at other times I can’t believe how far we’ve come. But I guess that’s life, and married life at that.

Between Mr and Mrs Lighty, the past five years have held: a wonderful wedding day, a fabulous honeymoon to New York and Mexico, a redundancy, a new sideline as a self-employed copywriter, a new full-time job, a house sale, moving in with Mummy and Daddy Hatchy, a house purchase, a house renovation, anxiety, the decision to start our own family, two 30th birthdays, countless minimoons and holidays, infertility, depression, a new car, a much-longed for pregnancy and finally a baby, and another new job. Yes, that’s a hell of a lot to pack into five years, but that’s our story!

Four years and 363 days ago, Mr and Mrs Lighty were on their honeymoon. Oh how happy we were! Everything seemed to be falling into place, all of our hopes and dreams for the future were laid out before us. We were in New York, and in New York it feels like anything can happen.

New York!

And pretty much anything and everything has happened in the last five years. Sometimes it wasn’t always what we had envisaged for our marriage, sometimes it’s been tough, and sometimes it’s been wonderful. But mostly it’s been us against the world.

About two years ago, just before we found out that Baby Lighty was on his way and when we were having a really tough time in the midst of infertility, when life had indeed happened while we were busy making those carefully laid plans, we promised ourselves that if we still hadn’t had our longed for baby by the time our fifth anniversary rolled around, we’d go back to New York. That playground of dreams. That place where anything could happen. Who knows, those dreams might just bring us our baby?

But five Lighty years on, and we’re not in New York. We’re in that home that we purchased – for it is now a home, rather than a house, after all of those renovations – and we’re not just Mr and Mrs Lighty against the world. It’s Mr and Mrs and Baby Lighty against the world. We have our baby!  To quote Sister Sledge this time, we are family. And to quote a friend of ours, we are the Mighty Lightys! As much as we loved New York and all of the dreams it held for us, I’m so glad that because of Baby Lighty, we’re here and not there.

Happy 5th Wedding Anniversary, Mr Lighty! xxx

    1. Thank you! I can imagine we would’ve actually have been quite depressed if we were in New York right now, as it would’ve meant that we still didn’t have our baby…

  1. What a beautiful post and lovely way to mark 5 amazing years! As a fellow Carrie Bradshaw fanatic I can absolutely identify with your love of NY. It’s such a mind blowing city isn’t it? Thank you for sharing your story with #FartGlitter and I’m so pleased that your 5 year anniversary sees you celebrating with your little man.

PS; erm – sorry about the size of the badge, We’re on it and it should be slightly less gigantic by next week 😉 xx

    1. Ha, I can’t say is actually noticed the gigantic badge to be honest!! ? I know, I love NYC, there’s something so magical about it, but obviously there’s also something so magical about having your very own baby too. Thanks for hosting #fartglitter, this is all very exciting!! Xxx

  2. Happy anniversary! Wow it certaintly does seem like you’ve managed to squeeze a lot in to 5 years. And even though New York is the most exciting city in the world I understand completely that home is the place you would rather be X #coolmumclub

    1. Thank you! A lot of what we squeezed in certainly wasn’t planned! And yes, it’s been lovely to celebrate this anniversary with a baby rather than being in New York. Thank you for taking the time to read my post xxx #coolmumclub

  3. I so feel this blog post. If we changed the words New York to Singapore, this is exactly how I feel too. Here’s to having an adventure overseas, but being back in Blighty Mrs Lighty too! And thanks for linking up to #coolmumclub chicky xx

    1. Ooh I’m loving the Blighty / Lighty rhyme! Very appropriate in her majesty’s birthday too!! Might have to pinch that… 😉 Thanks for having me on #coolmumclub, as always xxx
